Screenshot_2018-08-11 CARTEL-VII-CONGRESO-LA-SEMYR_Patrimonio-textual pdfIt is conference time and I am happy to announce that the VII Congreso Internacional de la SEMYR (4th-6th September 2018, Salamanca) will be hosting a whole session on Celestina, scheduled for the 5th September, at 16:00. The relevant papers are:

In a different session (6th September, 09:00), Laura Mier will be talking about “La representación del amor: de La Celestina a Don Perlimplín“, which also is of celestinesque interest.

Moreover, this year’s WISPS Annual Conference (2nd-3rd November 2018, University of London) celebrates its twentieth anniversary with a homage to the renowned celestinista Dorothy Severin. The special topic of the conference is “From Celestina to Celestina’s House: Archetypes Old and New in Hispanic and Luso-Afro-Brazilian Cultures”, so that there will be a lot of papers on Celestina. I cannot wait to see the programme!

More Celestina at congresses

More non-celestinesque duties have made it impossible to announce a paper of celestinesque interest at the XVIII Jornadas de Trabajo de la Asociación Española de Bibliografía (13th-14th November 2017, Biblioteca Nacional de España): María Remedios Prieto talked about La Celestina: contiendas suscitadas tras la publicación de la Comedia y algunas correcciones textuales en la Tragicomedia. Neither have we been able to announce the session Celestina and Beyond: Exploring the Abject in Medieval and Early Modern Literature” proposed by Ana M. Montero (St. Louis University) for the Sixth Annual Symposium on Medieval and Renaissance Studies (18th-20th June 2018, Saint Louis University), with a still open call for papers. However, today we have received the proceedings of the V Congreso Internacional sobre el Arcipreste de Hita “Dueñas, cortesanas y alcahuetas: Libro de buen amor, La Celestina, La Lozana andaluza” (26th-27th May 2017, Alcalá la Real), which includes several papers on celestinesque topics, and we would like to share them with you.

Celestina at international congresses in 2017

Other duties have prevented us from informing you on time about the many papers on Celestina read at international congresses on 2017. While the 2016 conferences season was rather poor in celestinesque topics, the roundtable “The Visual Culture of Celestina” at the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Renaissance Society of America (Boston, 31 March–2 April 2016) and the session on Celestina at the XIX Congreso Internacional de la AIH being the only representation of Celestina at international congresses known to us, this year seems more favourable to celestinesque papers. To this day, at least seven papers on Celestina were programmed at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Renaissance Society of America (Chicago, 30 March – 1 April 2017), at the 52nd International Congress on Medieval Studies (Medieval Institute, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, 11-14 May 2017), and at the LIII Congreso de la Asociación Canadiense de Hispanistas (Toronto, 21 May – 2 June 2017):

  • “Exhibit or Database? Literature or Art? Developing the Online Celestina Visual Project”, Enrique Fernandez (University of Manitoba), 63rd Annual Meeting of the RSA.
  • “Four Hispanic Examples of Friendship and Its European Correlatives: Libro de Alexandre, Libro de caballero Zifar, El Conde Lucanor, Celestina, Adam Alberto Vázquez Cruz (University of Saskatchewan), 52nd International Congress on Medieval Studies.
  • “From the Tormes Tanneries to the Puerta de Elvira: Celestina’s Morisca Daughters”, Andrea Nate (Truman State University), 52nd International Congress on Medieval Studies.

And there are several other papers programmed at the XI Congreso de la Asociación Internacional Siglo de Oro (Madrid, 10-14 July 2017) and the XVII Congreso Internacional de la Asociación Hispánica de Literatura Medieval (Rome, 26-30 September 2017):

More papers on Celestina: XVI Congresso da AHLM (21st-25th of September 2015, Universidade do Porto, Portugal)

Once again, Celestina is poorly represented at this year’s congress of the Asociación Hispánica de Literatura Medieval (AHLM), which is taking place from the 21st to the 25th of September 2015 at the Universidade do Porto (Portugal). Amaranta Saguar (Universität Trier) will be giving the only paper on a purely celestinesque topic, entitled “Las imagines  agentes de Celestina (II): la tradición iconográfica”, on Wednesday the 23th, during the sixth session of the congress and the first session of the day (09:00-10:30 a.m.). This paper is a continuation of the paper “Las imagines agentes de Celestina“, given in 2013 at the previous congress of the AHLM. At the same session, Juan Casas Rigall (Universidade de Santiago de Compostela) will also be talking about a celestinesque-related topic: “La marca de impresor de Fadrique de Basilea en la Celestina y otras estampas (1499-1516), con las naves de necios de fondo”.

Paper on Celestina at the XV Jornadas de Trabajo de la AEB (27th-28th November 2014, Biblioteca Nacional de España)

The Asociación Española de Bibliografía (AEB) organises, in collaboration with the Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE), the XV Jornadas de Trabajo de la AEB. From the 27th to the 28th of November, specialists on the History of the Book and bibliographers, young and old, will share and exchange their knowledge on the matter, as well as present their current projects, results and expectations in the Sala de Conferencias of the BNE.

Among the very interesting papers that will be read at the meeting, there is one of particular interest for “celestinistas”. On the 28th of November, at noon, Remedios Prieto de la Iglesia will be giving the paper “Erratas y correctores de la impresión: Alonso de Proaza y la Celestina“. Without an abstract, we can only imagine that it Prieto de la Iglesia will be talking about Alonso de Proaza’s role as an editor of Celestina.

The full programme can be found at the official website of the XV Jornadas de Trabajo de la AEB.
